REUNION WITH PAST　『過去との遭遇。』

It all started one night in early winter. As is often the case with me, I was listening online to AFN, which is an acronym for American Forces Network, a broadcast service provided by the US military to those stationed or assigned overseas, including Japan.

初冬のある晩のこと。私はいつものようにAFNのネット放送を聴いていた。AFNとは American Forces Network の略称で、海外に駐留するアメリカ軍関係者を対象とした放送サービスのことだ。

I was just about to turn off my computer, when a somewhat familiar voice caught my attention. It turned out that the man, who appeared on a radio talk show, went to great lengths to prove, or at least make us inclined to believe, that his supposedly paranormal ability was the real deal. The way he spoke with an Israeli accent was peculiar, which took me, in the blink of an eye, far back to those days when I was a little spoiled brat in short pants.

そろそろコンピュータの電源を落とそうかと思っていると、何か聞き覚えのある声が私の注意を引いた。ラジオのトーク番組に出演していたその男性は自分のいわゆる「超能力」が本物であることを証明というか、リスナーに信じてもらおうと延々と語り続けていた。そのイスラエル訛りの英語は独特で、これを聞いた私は瞬く間に半ズボンのいたずら坊主だった頃にタイムスリップしたような心地がした。

MAGARE! MAGARE! (BEND! BEND!) Hocus pocus! Abracadabra!

マガレ！マガレ！

The man, who went by the name of Uri Geller, continued in front of TV cameras, with a spoon in his hands. It was one spring night in March, 1974. He was in the midst of performing on a Japanese TV show. Mesmerized by the weird incantation, people all over Japan were glued to the TV set, as if frozen in time, utterly unable to take their eyes off what was about to unfold. It was something out of the ordinary, astoundingly unusual, too rare to believe. It suddenly occurred to me that he was casting a spell not only on the tiny spoon itself, but over the entire population of Japan.

ユリ・ゲラーと名乗るその男はスプーンを手に、テレビカメラの前で声を張り上げる。それは1974年3月、ある春の晩だった。彼は日本のテレビ番組で自らの「特技」を披露していたのだ。彼の口から発せられる「呪文」のようなコトバの羅列に魅せられ、日本中の視聴者はテレビにクギ付けとなっていた。あたかも時が止まったかのように、これから起こるであろう「奇跡」を見逃すまいと息を吞んでその様子を見守っている。この男、手中のちっぽけなスプーンだけではなく、全国の視聴者に魔法をかけているかのようだ。ふとそんな気がした。

Curiously enough, the spoon slowly started to bend with a countless number of witnesses watching the impossible turning into a reality.

するとあーら不思議、スプーンはゆっくりと曲がり始める。全国の視聴者は「あり得ないコト」が「現実」となるのをリアルタイムで目撃していた。

Then Uri Geller invited the viewers to gather in front of the TV with a broken watch, asking them to say with a loud voice in unison, UGOKE! or MOVE! Can you guess what happened next? Well, for the record I’d like to point out the fact that there were so many callers eager to report their successful results that the switchboard for telephones at the TV station was temporarily jammed.

それからユリ・ゲラーは壊れた時計をテレビの前に持ち寄り、「動け！」と大きな声で一斉に唱えるようにと視聴者に促す。それで何が起きたかって？ここでハッキリ言っておこう。実験の成功を放送局に電話で報告しようとする人が殺到し、電話回線がパンクしたとのこと。

In a nutshell, is he an adept illusionist, or an authentic psychic? I certainly find it stimulating to explore this gray area and try to draw a line between entertainment and the quest into the unknown. The question, however, has still remained unanswered.

結局のところこの男、「熟練したマジシャン」なのか、それとも「本物の能力者」なのか。この「灰色の領域」を探索し、エンターテインメントと真実の探求の間に線引きを試みることは確かに興味をそそられる。それでも真相は未だに謎のままだ。

Not to change the subject, the other day I had the opportunity to participate in a certain meet-up in Funabashi, where several people got together for a meal. We had known each other for a couple of years, but it was the very first time for us to actually meet face to face. Then one of the participants, a beautiful girl in her early twenties, came up with a kind of icebreaker which none of us had anticipated. She was bold enough to offer to show us something very special, that is, spoon-bending. She even went so far as to say that she would try and bend a spoon placed on the table without touching the object. How was it possible? I know how a parlor trick works. You are supposed to put your thumb on the neck of the spoon and apply minimum pressure until it bends. I’m not an idiot. I know that. But I couldn’t possibly figure out how to do it with no physical contact.

閑話休題。

先日船橋でネット仲間のオフ会があり、参加する機会があった。数年間続いている関係だが、じかに顔を合わせるのはこれが初めてだった。メンバーのひとり、20代前半の綺麗な女の子が自己紹介代わりに「ネタ」を披露してくれることとなったのだが、それがなんと「スプーン曲げ」だという。これは誰も予想していなかった展開だ。それも「手を触れずに」曲げるとか。そんなことあり得るのか？マジックとしてのスプーン曲げならわかる。スプーンの首のあたりに親指で圧力を加えるのだ。それなら知っている。でも「触れずに」曲げる？うーん、わからん。

ウホッ、この「既視感」！

Years down the road, my past has finally caught up with me.

長い年月を経て、「過去と再会」したひと時でした。
